A qualified solicitor and former professional musician, Charlie Irvine is a freelance mediator and trainer whose practice includes family, commercial, employment and professional complaints. He has developed Strathclyde Law School’s Masters programme in Mediation and Conflict Resolution in Glasgow, Scotland’s largest city. He has delivered keynote addresses and workshops at conferences in Ireland, South Africa, Scotland and the USA and recently started Strathclyde’s Mediation Clinic, providing small claims mediation in Glasgow Sheriff Court.

Charlie has a deep interest in the academic development of mediation. He took the MSc in Conflict Resolution and Mediation Studies at Birkbeck College, University of London, graduating with Distinction in 2007. His academic work is concerned with integrating the physical and emotional domain into mediation practice and the contribution of alternative dispute resolution to the justice system. In 2011 he attended ‘Dancing at the Crossroads’, an international event in Saas Fee, Switzerland exploring the contribution of dance and movement to conflict resolution. Here Charlie developed his critique of ‘mediating from the neck up’ and the ‘emotion grid’, both set out in "Building Emotional Literacy: A Grid for Practitioners" (see below).

Charlie is a regular contributor to the Kluwer Mediation Blog

He has also published a wide range of articles including:

  • ‘Do You See What I’m Dealing With Here: Vicious Circles in Conflict’ Journal of Mediation and Applied Conflict Analysis, Vol.1, 3
